Carbon Capture and Storage: From Smart Infrastructure Adaptation to Nature-Based Solutions

, ,

Thursday, 14th January 2021, 09.00 – 10.45 GMT

The fourth Nordic-Irish Partnership event on Smart Cities focused on smart solutions for carbon capture and storage (CCS) across the island of Ireland and the four Nordic countries, Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden.

Both Ireland and Northern Ireland are committed to net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.  Ireland, for example, is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by, on average, 7% per annum for the next ten years. To fulfil this ambitious goal there is an urgent need for climate action and innovative smart solutions.

Solutions for capturing and storing carbon are being researched and developed across Europe, and have the potential to significantly limit greenhouse gas emissions. Carbon capture and storage, also referred to as carbon capture and sequestration, is the process of capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) before or after it enters the atmosphere, for it to be stored long-term in safe, natural locations. There are a range of different methods to capture and store carbon, ranging from reforestation for natural carbon sequestration in trees to integrated solutions for large-scale carbon capture on specific sites and storage in subsea geological formations and depleted oil and gas reserves.

These methods, or the combination of them, could drastically reduce emissions and bring Ireland and Europe towards carbon neutrality.

The topic of the webinar was smart solutions for carbon capture, storage and sequestration with presentations on a range of different solutions from climate smart forestry to industrial CO2 capture, transportation and storage.
